What Can I Do For You Today?

What can I do for You today, Lord, I ask?
If You were a baby I could do every task
I could wash You and change You and keep You from harm
Then hold You and nurse You, make sure that You’re warm
But You are in Glory, both Saviour and Friend
And mine’s the old story, frail human, poor friend.

So what can I do for You, Lord of my life?
If I lived for ever would that, then, suffice?
Would I somehow be purer though older and weak
Not acting too roughly; more kind when I speak?
Would time really change me and soften my heart?
Yes, if I surrender my all, not just part.

Then if I live for ever, or just for one day
Let me do something for You Lord, I pray
A smile, a kind word, a blessing or two
To give someone who is grieving or longing for You
Lord, shine through my eyes, my smile and my love
Doing something for others, and yet for You, Whom I love.
